Selecting a title is interesting! Often, it is a collaborative effort
between me, my editor, and my literary agent. For Shadow Fall, I remember
that I came up with that one early in the writing process as I was
surrounded by photographs of the Piney Woods of Texas. I liked how the words
evoked a feeling of being deep in the woods and how the word “shadow” hints
at mystery.
Other times my editor comes up with the perfect title. Sometimes we all go
round and round getting feedback on our ideas.
Typically I begin the day with a jog or a walk, and I listen to a playlist that reminds me of the book I’m working on. I like to pick songs with lyrics that evoke something about my story—maybe the setting or maybe the characters.
I started out as a reporter and so I’m a bit of a news junkie. Sometimes a headline will set me off on the path of “what if?” and soon I’ve got a story or a character in mind.
